Vegan Matcha Latte

It’s true, folks. Matcha is the new coffee.

Don’t get me wrong, I love making fancy vegan mochas with my espresso machine. It’s like a treat AND caffeine boost in one. However, the problem with espresso for me is that it gives me those mid-day coffee jitters, and leaves my mind racing at nighttime, interrupting my sleep. Since matcha tea naturally contains caffeine, the energy boost you obtain from matcha is actually due to a unique combination of caffeine withย other nutrients.ย The feelings of energy and wakefulness one gets from a cup of matcha tea can last up to 6 hours, without the usual side effects of coffee. This can be attributed to the positive effects of L-Theanine, which is why matcha drinkers experience none of the usual side effects of stimulants, resulting in smooth, clean energy.

Although it’s been around for centuries, this super green powerhouse has become extremely popular among the Western population over the last few years. Unlike green tea, matcha tea is a smooth powder composed of finely ground green tea leaves which are shaded from the sun during their last few weeks of growth, resulting in their astonishingly bright green colour due to high chlorophyll content.

Matcha tea is more potent than green tea because when one drinks matcha, one consumes the entire tea leaf as opposed to just green-tea infused water steeped from the tea bag. Because of this, matcha boasts a dozen benefits, such as:

I never truly got into matcha until a year ago, and I instantly fell in love with the smooth, green-tea like taste. I’m a sucker for tea lattes (my ultimate fav remains the London fog), so I knew this matcha latte recipe would be an instant hit. I love the creaminess of the almond milk mixed with the light sweetness of vanilla and agave, and I find it blends well with the vegetal taste of matcha.

Vegan Matcha Latte

Serves: 1 Prep Time: 2 minutes Cooking Time: 5 minutes

Ingredients

1 tsp. matcha powder
1 cup of unsweetened almond milk
Dash of pure vanilla extract
1 tbsp. pure maple syrup/agave (optional sweetener)
1 tsp. maca powder (optional; for hormone-balancing)

Instructions

  1. On the stovetop, heat 1 cup of milk in a small pot.
  2. When milk begins to boil, turn down heat and add in matcha powder (and maca powder if desired), whisking vigorously until smooth.
  3. Mix in a dash of vanilla and desired sweetener.
  4. Remove from heat. Pour contents into small cup or mug and enjoy immediately.
